LEKA
LEKA is a series of sculptures made from standardized Leca blocks. Common in the built environment but rarely noticed in their own right, they are usually used for walls and other structures. Here they are removed from their familiar context and transformed into organic sculptures of varying sizes and forms. These forms break with the block’s original rectangular geometry and draw attention to the material’s porous surface and tactile qualities. The Leca block is presented not as a construction element, but as a sensory material with its own visual character and sculptural potential.
The work explores how the material changes through carving. The blocks are joined together and shaped with stone-carving tools. Some surfaces are left raw, retaining traces of the material’s origin and the block’s original form, while others are worked further to expose the material’s interior and create new forms. Selected pieces are also painted in vivid tones. The sculptures invite exploration and movement. They have functional qualities without being defined by a specific use, leaving room for improvisation, curiosity and bodily engagement.
