Soft Balance
Soft Balance combines a thin sheet of steel with pink foam, two familiar materials with very different properties. Foam is commonly associated with comfort and protection and is often close to the body, yet usually hidden. Here it is exposed, vulnerable and tactile. By contrast, the steel sheet is associated with industry and strength, providing support while also revealing an ability to bend and yield under the weight of the body. The work explores how the materials act in relation to one another and how their properties are activated through contact with the body. Together they create a balance between hardness and softness, with these qualities not simply opposing one another but acting through each other.
At the centre of the sheet the surface feels firm and stable, but the further one moves towards the edges, the more it gives way. Moving across the work heightens awareness and makes the body conscious of its own weight, balance and position. The body must listen to the surface and adjust in response. In this way, encountering the work becomes a bodily experience, shifting the viewer from observer to active participant.
